Research Topics:
Listreia epidemiology and virulence in Israel: We have performed a nationwide retrospective cohort 10 years surveillance of all Israeli LM cases during 1998-2007. During the 10 years of the study we have identified 483 cases, of which 166 cases were pregnancy associated cases. The yearly incidence in Israel reached 9.6 cases/million, which is almost 5 times than the current rate in the USA. The incidence in pregnancy varied widely between 5 to 25 cases/100,000 pregnancies/ year. High rates above 15 cases/100,000 year occurred in several years (one of the highest ever reported) with estimated perinatal mortality of ~50%. Additionally, a single case of maternal mortality was recorded. The mortality in non-pregnancy cases was 18%. Similar to the finding that was reported in the UK and Europe, a gradual increase in elderly associated cases was found and reached 42.7 cases/million/ year. Geospatial analysis suggested that 2 districts are more prone to have LM infections. We also have performed Molecular analysis of LM isolates that suggested that a third of LM pregnancy associated cases were caused by a single LM clone. We are currently looking into possible virulence determinants and mechanisms that might explain increased virulence and incidence of LM in Israel. Mycoplasma physiology We are working on protein tyrosin phsophorilation in mycoplasmas and looking at the effect of diffrenet carbon sources on phosphorilation.
