Research Topics:
biofilm; biopesticide; cytotoxicity; regulation; insect; proteomic; quorum sensing; host-pathogen interaction; virulence. The research programmes developed by the Microbial Genetics and Environment Research Unit focus on bacteria of the Bacillus cereus group, specifically B. cereus stricto sensu and Bacillus thuringiensis. The B. cereus species contains strains responsible for food-borne infections (gastroenteritis), and strains which cause opportunistic infections such as endophthalmitis and periodonitis. B. cereus is generally considered as an emerging pathogen. The B. thuringiensis species includes bacteria producing insecticidal toxins. The major themes of the unit are: 1- Characterisation of the the virulence factors. 2- Regulation of virulence gene expression. 3- Study of bacteria/host cells interactions. 4- Adaptation of the bacteria to various environmental conditions.

Infection of insect larvae; gene disruption in B. cereus; 2D electrophoresis; techniques for molecular and cellular biology.
