Research Topics:
Genes important for intracellular survival and reactivation of mycobacteria and Chlamydophila pneumoniae Our research interests focus on the genetic mechanisms utilized by mycobacteria and chlamydiae to promote their intracellular survival and reactivation within the eukaryotic host. Mycobacteria maintain their vacuoles as non-acidic compartments that do not fuse with lysosomes. These bacteria require the regulated expression of a set of genes to maintain a persistent infection. We would like to study some of these genes. Their products could be possible targets for drug development. The role of RNase E in the regulation of RNA metabolism, SmpB and trans-translation and in general, the connection of bacterial metabolism and pathogenecity will also be studied.
